Caring for someone is sacred!
A social worker can really change society by ensuring social welfare and quality of life. A social worker helps others discover their potential. Social work is an academic programme that promotes social change and development, social cohesion, and increases people’s ability to function independently and be free in society. The principles of social justice, human rights and respect for diversity are at the heart of social work.
The Social Work programme is based on social sciences and humanities and theories of special knowledge. It envisages the participation of people in solving their life problems and improving their long-term well-being.
One of the critical functions of a Social Work specialist is to help people avoid various risks and threats in modern times, to help them build a life, and to activate the power and potential of those in need. The efforts of the social worker are aimed both at improving the living standards of individuals, and at achieving the social welfare of society as a whole. A social worker strives to modify the social environment and improve life across society. This gives the social worker a sense of accomplishment.
In today's volatile world, with economic crises, wars and terrorist threats, social work is vital for people in all countries. The population, especially vulnerable groups, cannot withstand certain difficulties on their own. The foremost goal of a social worker is to ensure their employment.
Social work is a relatively young profession in Azerbaijan. Therefore, exchange of knowledge and experience in the form of joint research, connection and training experience with foreign scientists and practitioners is especially important for both teachers and students.
Today, the skills of social workers cannot be limited to their ability to help people in difficult life situations. The social worker must try to mitigate risks, identify the causes of vulnerability within this category of people, and contribute to the social well-being of various social groups. Social work today is a field of innovative technologies, creative approaches, career opportunities, and most importantly, providing real help to people in need.
Social work heals humanity. Medical social work protects and promotes physical and mental health (individual and collective). Medical social work is a highly specialised activity demanding a variety of skills. Our students acquire important analytical skills that play a key role in the development of scientific and professional activities.
To earn a degree, students must complete a pre-diploma internship and defend a dissertation. Successful graduates perform as managers and specialists in governmental and non-governmental organisations, in state authorities and local government bodies- as employees in social sector departments. They may also work in social service centres, as researchers and consultants in businesses and socio-political organisations, as experts on social issues in the media, and in rehabilitation centres.
